I decided to enter the 36th Winter Art Show at The Matthews Opera House & Arts Center. I waited until the last minute too.

Finished these in the fall, but I hadn't wired them for hanging until this morning. I don't know why it always takes me so long to wire stuff. It's not even close to being hard.

The reception for the show is next Wed., Jan. 14. I have to attend because I'm the marketing manager for The Matthews. We're getting live coverage from NBC's NewsCenter1 too. Cold, dreary day in the Black Hills of South Dakota today. Good day to get back to painting.

I've had this small board sketched out for over a year. It was stuck upside down on a shelf and I just found it yesterday.

It took me more time setting up my work area and palette than painting the piece! Fruit and vegetables are fun to work with. They don't move or talk back. Small blessings.
May 11 in the Black Hills of South Dakota means a dark, rainy, and COLD (37 degrees) day. That wasn't in the plan. We were going to hit some local nurseries for herb plants and soils. No point in that today!

Unfortunately, this kind of weather makes me a bit lazy. After 15 cups of coffee (not really), I decided to do a larger version of "Leaving West River" AND to start watching "Breaking Bad." I must be the only person in the country who has never watched a single episode.

A couple of weeks ago I did this painting in acrylics and much smaller, 5" x 7". Today's version is in oil on an 18" x 24" canvas. Looks a bit different, but it was a fun one to do. Just below are a couple shots of the painting in different stages of completion. Oh...and I got 3 episodes of the show under my belt...no opinion one way or the other yet!

Woo hoo!

Since having to work the last couple of weekends at The Matthews, I got Monday off. And what a quandary. Gorgeous spring day in the Black Hills or take the day to paint.

I painted. This painting is from a photo I took last year. I was on a walk through my neighborhood in Lead, SD. Suffice it to say, Lead is in transition--for the last 40 years. Most of the homes are owned by absentee landlords who don't give a crap about their properties. As long as there are folks willing to live in them cheaply, landlords don't keep them up.

Anyway, Lead is a mountain town and a simple walk around the block is a cardio-exercise. I turned around to catch my breath this day and saw this home lit by the sun. Loved the shot and have been holding on to it to use as a painting subject for a year.

This was relatively easy to paint. Good subjects are. I managed to finish this in one day, but I will reserve sending this to my gallery for a bit. First, it has to dry and second, I tend to find little tweeks to take care of while walking by it for the next few days.

Just below are images of the painting in it's different stages of completion.
This afternoon I will be heading over to the Bay Leaf Cafe in Spearfish to hang a show--mine! The venue is a great supporter of the arts and has invited me to show for the month of May. It's only a block away from The Matthews Art Gallery, where I also show my work (and work there!).

I guess you would say I have the town covered. Heh.

I finally got to do some painting today. We moved to Spearfish, SD last Labor Day and with work being so hectic and the world's longest winter -- ever, painting took a back seat.

I had some 5"x7" cradled gessobords that have been underpainted with cad red since Illinois was a praire. So after lunch was made and Jack's kids were fed and back on their way to Rapid City, I sat down for a couple of landscapes that I've been wanting to play with for awhile.

My paintings come from my photos. The first one (at top) was from a trip during late summer driving back from East River. That means we were in the eastern part of South Dakota (east of the Missouri River). East River looks and feels a lot different than West River where we live. Flatter, hotter, more humid. But I have always loved farmland scenes, especially ones with hay bales.

September Walk: Before Atlas
5" x 7"
Acrylic on cradled gessobord

This painting is from when I was on a walk last September. In Spearfish, there are many groomed walking paths that run throughout the town. One in particular runs along Spearfish Creek and along campgrounds. It was a great day for a very long walk. Who knew that one week later Storm Atlas would hit (Oct. 3 2013) and dump over 3 feet of snow, crushing many trees that were still in full leaf.

So, this painting reminds me of the fall that almost was.
While Jack and his 2 kids were at the Spearfish Rec Center enjoying the pool, I used it as a day to paint the third in a series of Bear Butte paintings.

This piece is on gallery-wrapped canvas rather than the cradled gessobord I normally use. I also painted this with acrylics instead of oils. It made for a rather quick painting, despite its size. As you can see, the painting started out on a cad red background like all my other paintings. Don't know why, but it just makes it easier to get a fast start with a colored background than fighting the feeling of needing to get the white canvas filled up.

Step 1--- RED!

Once I finish editing the painting image for both the web and my records, the boring part of painting will begin with getting these 3 Bear Butte pieces ready for hanging. One good thing is...power tools. Kinda dig that.

These will be on display and for sale at The Matthews Opera House & Arts Center. All my work is sold through the gallery. They are a non-profit gallery and any commission helps keep their doors open! Just so you know, I don't increase the cost of my paintings to cover my commission. In fact, I make less when sold through the gallery. It's just a win-win to be honest. They support me and my art in many ways and to undercut them is so not nice!
Today I finished another piece in my series of paintings representing scenes from Bear Butte just outside of Sturgis, SD. Previous posts explain the history and meaning of this sacred place.

This painting shows another tree with prayer cloths tied to it. Most of the trees along the walking path have the cloths tied in the branches. This work will be on display and for sale at The Matthews Opera House & Arts Center. Link to the gallery is in the next paragraph.
I started this painting as a demonstration while being an artist in residence at the Spearfish Canyon Lodge. The Matthews Opera House & Arts Center and the Lodge have combined efforts to promote the arts of the Black Hills with the many visitors who stay at the Lodge during the busy tourism season here. Every Tuesday and Sunday a different artist sets up in the lobby to demonstrate their talents and hopefully sell some of their work. My next demo date is next Sunday, 7/7 between 3pm-7pm. It's a good thing.

Once I get off the computer, I'll start a 24x36 canvas with my 3rd Bear Butte piece.

As I mentioned in my last post about this piece, it wouldn't take long to finish! The painting was just dry enough to tighten up some of the bush and minor fixes on the prayer cloths and grasses.

I'm kinda digging this one.

Think I will do another Bear Butte scene. Makes me happy. If you are ever in the northern Black Hills, be sure to go to Bear Butte and hike it. Stay on the trails. Unexpected storms can be a good thing. I was torn between starting a painting or getting outside to enjoy the warm sunny weather. So, I took an hour to bask in the beauty that is the Black Hills, before heading inside to start a canvas. Good thing too. As soon as I set up, dark clouds came out of nowhere.

The subject of today's painting is from a hike Jack and I took over a year ago on Bear Butte Mountain. We hadn't planned on doing the hike, but decided to get up close and personal with nature and the prayer cloths on numerous trees & bushes along the hike. Here's a bit more about Bear Butte (that I copied from BlackHillsSouthDakota.com).

A SACRED MOUNTAINIn most religions, specific areas or sites hold great spiritual significance. Bear Butte is such a place. Many Native Americans see the mountain as a place where the creator has chosen to communicate with them through visions and prayer.

During your visit, you will see colorful pieces of cloth and small bundles or pouches hanging from the trees. These prayer cloths and tobacco ties represent the prayers offered by individuals during their worship.

The painting needs to dry a bit in order for me to finish some of the final details. All in all, it didn't take long to get this one going. The size of the painting is 12" x 24", and is on cradled gessobord.

I'll post when it's completed.

This summer, June through mid-September, my art and the art of several gallery artists from The Matthews, will be on display at the Spearfish Canyon Lodge. The Lodge is generously giving the gallery exhibition space free of charge and all commissions from sold artwork are going to The Matthews. Very generous indeed.

We (the artists) will be taking turns meeting the guests of the Lodge along with demonstrating our technique. Every Sunday and Tuesday, starting June 4, from 3pm to 7pm will have a different artist. My first day is June 23. A couple of weeks ago I put a teaser image of my commission on my blog. Here is the whole enchilada! This was my first attempt at ocean/seascapes. I was a bit intimidated by this at first, but it went much faster than I thought would happen.

I had to wait for it to dry completely before getting her all wired up. Jack and I delivered it to my friends and clients this past Monday, just as a Black Hills spring blizzard was taking a firm foothold. They live on a tall hill in Deadwood and we live on an even higher hill in Lead (neighboring town).

We would have loved to sit with them by the fire and have had one more drink, but thought it best to get going when the going was good.

Maybe we should have left earlier.

Neither of us were able to get to our house in Lead. I had to leave the car 3 blocks downhill that evening. Work was called off for 2 days (nice) but it continued snowing until Wednesday afternoon. Here is what my car looked like 1 1/2 days later!

We had a foot (or more) of SPRING snow yesterday & all last night in the hills of Lead, SD. That means spending a day in my studio. Woot. (Update...Jack just came back from retrieving my car from where I had to park it last night. Couldn't make it up the hill. He took a picture of the park in Lead. There is an Easter Egg Hunt going on in all that snow!)

Today, I am putting the finishing touches on a 30" x 30" oil commission. No picture yet until I deliver it to my clients!

Can't wait for my new panels!

But, before getting into the studio, I saw that Jerry's Artarama is having a big BOGO sale on brushes and stuff. Love art shopping from my living room! I use mainly Ampersand Gessobords for my work. The smooth solid feel of the board works great with either acrylic or oils. I also use the 1.5" or 2" cradled boards. This way I can save the cost of framing and keep the cost of the paintings down for my customers!

Stay tuned for some quick sneek peeks of my commission later. Have a lovely day.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03922837232926592492noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16588547.post-40544924387681843442013-03-16T11:53:00.001-05:002013-03-16T11:53:42.917-05:00Way to push a deadline! Well, it's been snowing for over 24 hours and I'm going a bit cabin crazy. We have at least a foot. It's hard to tell since the snow is blowing sideways. There are 2 and 3' drifts all around the house. And Lead being Lead, there hasn't been a single plow on our road.

So, it was time to finish the painting I started last Sunday. The studio was freezing which made for a quick studio afternoon. There wasn't much to do since my last post.

Isn't it grand when a painting practically paints itself?
This was a nice Sunday. Did some contract work for a couple of Facebook clients, did some laundry, actually wired up a painting (that I always put off), Jack did the cooking for supper, and I got into the studio and started a painting. In fact, I almost finished it. Sometimes it happens that way, doesn't it?

Earlier this summer, Jack and I rode our bikes on the Mickelson Trail in South Dakota. There were so many beautiful scenes it was hard to pick which painting to do. Private note: Later on the ride, I was mesmerized by the scenery so much that I rode right off the trail and down a rocky embankment. That hurt like a son of a gun.

Anyhooo...
As most of you know, I always paint my gessobord or canvas first red or some warm color. I don't like starting a painting on a a white background. After the background is dry, I sketched in the landscape with pencil very lightly and then went over it in a dark paint. Both the background and the sketching paint is acrylic. No patience for waiting for the boring part to dry. When I want to paint, I want to paint now, not in 2 days.

Then, the hard part was -- do I finish it in acrylics or oils. That took about 45 seconds to decide. Oil. Then it was off to the races.

So, here is the painting in stages. I hope to finish sometime this week and when I do I'll post again.

Have a great week!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03922837232926592492noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16588547.post-88941010295632737202013-02-03T14:53:00.001-06:002013-02-03T15:01:20.113-06:00"The Last Stand" all wired up

This painting was finished a few months ago, but it took me forever to get it wired and ready to hang. I even named it!

Last spring, my daughters came out for a visit from Chicago. We drove through Custer State Park in Custer, SD. I don't live too far from there and had never gone through it before. Isn't that the way? The last people to play tourist are the people who live in the area!

We wanted to see the roaming buffalo and their new babies -- which we saw plenty of. Along the way, we were slowly driving by this large grassy hill with only one tree on top. Erin, my oldest, jumped out to run up and I took a bunch of pictures.

So, that is why it is called "The Last Stand."
Just had a thought. Jack has a good camera and he does a lot of photography. Duh. I'll just have to put him to work. However, he just finished mowing the lawn with a push lawn mower. He needs a bit of a rest!

The hill is in Custer State Park in Custer, SD. Great place to see prairie dogs, antelope, and of course lots of free roaming buffalo. We went when there were lots of baby buffalo. This hill just stood apart from all the pine trees and aspens.

Check out the pictures below of my process doing this painting. In case some of you are new to my blog, I start every painting with a colored base...normally a cad red or orange or a variation of some warm tone. It gives the painting a head start and isn't as intimidating as starting with a blank, white canvas.

A cold, rainy day makes it easier to buckle down and paint. This is from a photo taken last weekend when my daughters visited from Chicago. We were driving through Custer State Park and my oldest bolted from the car to climb the hill that had only one tree.

Still deciding whether to finish in oils or acrylics.

More to come.

Frank is our black pug. He's seven now and quite the clown. I started this painting of him before Christmas, but got side tracked with holiday stuff. It was going to be Jack's Christmas gift, then his birthday gift, and now it's his Easter gift!

This is a rather posterized style that I haven't done before. Frank seemed to be the perfect subject for this type of painting. In fact, he slept near my feet the whole time I was working on this today.

I haven't been in my studio a lot because it has become the catch-all for all kinds of junk. So we purchased a couple sets of 3-shelf bookcases really cheap and Jack finished putting them together yesterday. Now I can load them up with stuff sitting in boxes all around the place. Once I was done with that, I actually wanted to spend a sunny afternoon painting in the place -- and I did!

Planning on spending more time doing just that.
